Humans are not an exclusive club. No secret handshake required. On November 15, the United Nations predicted that we will add one more eight billion (living) member.

 

This is a terrible sign for some, not only because of the great number of the number - take it to Wembley Stadium with 90,000 seats of London, squared - but also because of the speed of the neck we got. After all, it took us all of human history until 1804 to reach our first billion. And then it took us only one hundred and twenty three years to reach the second. It quadrupled in less than a century 

That was in 1927. Less than a century later, the number had quadrupled. But population growth is not a runaway train. The global fertility rate has been declining since 1964, from 5 births per woman to less than 2.5 today. As a result, the speed of population growth has increased. Since the 1960s - when we reached our three billion mark - we have added billions at a time of about one every 12 to 14 years. The United Nations Population Division predicts that these periods will be extended again after eight billion years, and that the human population will reach its peak - at least in numbers - by the end of the century, in less than 11 billion.

 

The next demographic crisis will bring many concerns and problems of its own. Still, knowing that the system will eventually slow down is good news. This represents a refreshing change from other inevitable threats to our existence, such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and resource depletion. Everything serves as a long prelude to great success: instead of a precursor to disaster, cards like this can become a curiosity in the future. In a century or two, our successors, who live on uninhabited planets, may study them and wonder: "How old we were!"
